In what could be the lethal legal blow that ends the Bush Administration’s war on obscenity, a federal judge in Pittsburgh has ruled that federal obscenity distribution laws are unconstitutional. http://abcnews.go.com Anti-pornography groups called the decision stunning, while porn distributors called it a “big win for the entire business.” http://www.family.org The case involved the most “extreme” videos sold, depicting things like rape. The judge pointed to internet filtering software as “a less obtrusive means” of restricting access to minors, and ruled that "the government can no longer rely on the advancement of a moral code, i.e., preventing consenting adults from entertaining lewd and lascivious thoughts as a legitimate, let alone a compelling, state interest." A copy of the case, The United States of America v. Extreme Associates is posted at pittsburgh_porn_case [pdf] For more information on the influence of pornography and addiction, we suggest visiting Enough is Enough at http://www.enough.org/ and their sister site on kids and internet safety at http://www.protectkids.com/.

The last victim dropped was subjected to such a grueling deposition in October that he vomited and hasn’t been seen since. http://news.bostonherald.com After yesterday’s testimony, the last remaining victim begged the judge not to make him start describing the abuse all over again, which he will be forced to do today. Next, he can expect to be grilled by defense attorneys about his “recovered memories.” http://olympics.reuters.com and http://slate.msn.com He is back on the stand today. http://wireservice.wired.com For more on the science of memory, we suggest vol2_iss41
