 The Irish diocese of Ferns is expected to emerge today as one of the worst in the world for clerical child abuse. http://breakingnews.iol.ie Up to 30 priests based in County Wexford are expected to be criticized in the explosive 271-page Ferns Inquiry Report, which is published this afternoon. Minister for Children Brian Lenihan presented the dossier to the Cabinet this afternoon and the Attorney General gave legal advice on its publication.
 The (Irish) Catholic Communications Office declined to comment ahead of a report that the Department of Health said had been put to the cabinet in the morning. An inquiry into sex abuse by at least 60 Catholic clerics in the Dublin (Ireland) diocese is expected to follow hard on the heels of the report on abuse in the diocese of Ferns, due out today. http://www.unison.ie
The fresh investigation into abuse in the Dublin diocese will mean that the Catholic Church will have to face the fall-out from clerical sex scandals for several years to come.
We have said repeatedly that this is a problem which is not unique to the Catholic Church. It is now quite apparent that it is not a uniquely American problem either.
 A man whose molestation of a 9-year-old girl was discovered when he turned in pictures of the abuse to a Wal-Mart photo lab was sentenced Monday to a lengthy federal prison term. http://www.modbee.com Steven Michael Kelly, a 42-year-old commercial truck driver from Reno, Nevada, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for transporting the child and producing child pornography. In August, 2004, Kelly persuaded the sister of his girlfriend to let him take her daughter and 5-year-old son from their home in Glendale, Ariz., to Disneyland. A decade ago, Kelly served a five-year sentence in Arizona for child molestation. Kelly’s name does not appear in Arizona’s online sex offender database. http://az.gov
