L.A. Archdiocese moved problem priests for 75 years…

After nearly three years of legal wrangling, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles has released information from the personnel files of 126 clergy accused of sexual abuse. The confidential records show that for more than 75 years the nation's largest archdiocese shipped accused priests between therapy and new assignments, often ignoring parishioners' complaints. http://www.cnn.com Summaries of the personnel records were disclosed Tuesday as part of settlement talks with lawyers for more than 500 accusers who sued the nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese. http://www.allheadlinenews.com The records include priests who were ordained as far back as the 1920s.

KTLA reports that the documents released indicate that numerous children might have avoided harm if church leaders in the 1960s, '70s and '80s had reacted more vigorously to warnings about abusive priests. http://ktla.trb.com The documents have been posted on the archdiocese website at http://www.la-archdiocese.org.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Diocese of Spokane would sell its headquarters and the home of Bishop William Skylstad to settle claims of people who contend they were sexually abused by priests, according to a reorganization plan the diocese filed Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. http://www.heraldnet.com But the issue of who owns individual parishes, schools and other Catholic property in the diocese is still unresolved, so the plan to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy carries few specifics on the amount of money that would be available for victims. Church officials are appealing a Bankruptcy Court ruling that all of the individual parishes and many other Catholic assets of the diocese can be included in the settlement pot.
