Ohio social worker approved cages, skips country…
Michael and Sharen Gravelle, the adoptive parents of a group of children who were confined in cages at night (see vol3_iss52 and vol3_iss53) claimed that a social worker approved the “enclosures.” http://www.newsnet5.com The social worker, who made weekly visits to the home, is now missing. She is reportedly out of the country. The children were housed in cages at night for three years.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services is launching a review of the Huron County Department of Job and Family Services, which is handling the case. http://www.newsnet5.com The state will be looking at the files of every agency, public and private, involved in the adoptions of the children. Huron County Department of Job and Family Services officials are accused of having "prior knowledge of inappropriateness in this household" and failing "to take action," director Erich Dumbeck said in a statement Tuesday. http://www.norwalkreflector.com "This agency, along with the sheriff's department, are in the midst of an investigation and are not at liberty to share such information due to confidentiality laws sent fort in the Ohio Administrative Code,” Dumbeck said.

Michael Gravelle’s biological daughter, Jenna, claims she grew up as a prisoner in her own home. http://www.morningjournal.com She also revealed that he had sexually molested her since “as early as she can remember.” Jenna Gravelle claims that within months after her mother's death, Michael Gravelle turned himself in to Lorain County Children Services and began treatment in a program addressing his behavior. According to the daughter, it was during the treatment meetings that her father met Sharen Johns, who became his wife in 1987. Jenna Gravelle explained that the treatment meetings were not only for sexual abusers but those affected in other ways by abuse. ''That's where he met Sharen,'' Gravelle said of her father's treatment program. ''Isn't that lovely?''

Background checks show majority of Katrina evacuees to Rhode Island have criminal arrest records…
After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, federal officials flew more than 100 victims to Rhode Island. They were greeted by the governor and cheered by residents. State police did criminal background checks on every refugee and found that more than half had a criminal arrest records - a third for felonies. http://www.baytownsun.com In South Carolina, state police checked every evacuee flown there by the government. Of 547 people checked, 301 had criminal records, according to Robert Stewart, state Law Enforcement Division Chief. Two weeks ago we asked where New Orleans’ 1406 registered sex offenders were. vol3_iss52 Currently, there are 1387 registered sex offenders still listing Orleans Parish as their address. http://www.lasocpr.lsp.org With Hurricane Rita bearing down on Texas and Louisiana, let’s hope local officials do a better job identifying sex offenders this time.

Grand Jury blasts Philly Archdiocese’s “Immoral Cover-up”…
A grand jury yesterday excoriated the Philadelphia Archdiocese and its former top leaders, saying they allowed hundreds of sexual assaults against children to go unpunished and protected the priests who committed the crimes. http://www.philly.com In searing language, the panel accused former church officials, including Cardinals Anthony J. Bevilacqua and John Krol, of "burying" abuse reports, ignoring warnings about abusive priests, and shuttling offenders from parish to parish, where some found new victims. "Sexually abusive priests were left quietly in place or 'recycled' to unsuspecting new parishes - vastly expanding the number of children who were abused," the grand jury concluded. The hierarchy "excused and enabled the abuse" for decades, the grand jury said in a 418-page report, while demonstrating "utter indifference to the suffering of the victims." The full text of the grand jury report is available at http://www.philly.com. Also available are the Archdiocese’s response, a catalogue of sexually abusive priests and a list of their parish assignments.
