Where are New Orleans’ 1406 sex offenders?…
A search of the Louisiana sex offender and child predator registry today shows 1406 offenders still listed in Orleans Parish. http://www.lasocpr.lsp.org Does anyone know if these offenders have been relocated to other cities or are in shelters with children? SAVE has been unsuccessful in trying to get an answer from Louisiana officials. As we reported previously, Florida moves sex offenders to shelters in jails when hurricanes hit. vol3_iss47 A 13-year-old mentally-challenged Arkansas girl was raped by a Katrina evacuee with a long criminal record. http://www.kark.com Massachusetts officials have found 3 registered sex offenders after 60 background checks on evacuees to Cape Cod. http://www.capecodonline.com

In addition to the dangers posed by sex offenders, unprecedented numbers of shaken children left in Hurricane Katrina's wake are testing the nation's network for emergency psychological help, according to caregivers and experts. http://abcnews.go.com Counseling teams have been dispatched to shelters across the South where, beside overwhelmed parents, some children rested on cots with their heads covered, stared into nothingness, or cowered at a simple rain shower. Everyone remembers the poignant image of a 6-year-old boy holding a 5-month-old and leading a group of five toddlers to safety in downtown New Orleans. “The majority of children faced with trauma do try to rally, but many can’t rally that much,” child psychologist Stuart Goldman, M.D. says. “The images of young kids taking care of younger children are probably the marked exception, not the rule.”

Ohio foster children found locked in cages…
The children were found locked in cages at their home in Wakeman, Ohio.Police in northern Ohio on Monday rescued eight children whose parents told authorities they kept the kids in locked cages for their own protection . http://www.cnn.com The children, ages 1 to 14, were all either adopted or foster children. Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said the parents claimed a psychiatrist recommended they place the children in cages. http://www.cbsnews.com “The impression that we got was that they felt it was OK," he said. "The parents thought they were providing for the protection of the children from themselves and from each other They thought there were circumstances with these children that warranted the cages at night."

In other news…
More fallout in the case of a 22-year-old Nebraska man who fled to Kansas to marry his 14-year-old pregnant “girlfriend” with her parents’ permission. http://abcnews.go.com (also see vol3_iss50) The man, Mathew Koso is charged with first-degree sexual assault in his home state of Nebraska and faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted. He began dating the girl when she was 12.

School has started and that means opportunity for child predators. An 11-year-old Missouri boy scared off an alleged kidnapper while waiting for the school bus. http://www.kmci.com For some simple, basic rules on school bus safety visit http://www.aboutschool.com

A Connecticut mother will plead guilty to charges stemming from an alleged sexual relationship she had with her daughter's 8-year-old schoolmate under a tentative agreement. http://www.courttv.com The relationship was uncovered when the boy’s mother found a love letter from the woman.
