ABC News reports that psychologists at Vanderbilt and Yale universities have been studying the effect that highly emotional images have on our perception of the world around us, and they've found convincing evidence that the human brain just can't process information that it receives immediately after seeing a violent or erotic scene. http://abcnews.go.com We're talking real short term here, around a fifth to a half a second, but given the speed of today's society, that may be enough to worry about. A fast-moving vehicle, for example, can travel a significant distance in that brief span of time.
The High School Survey of Student Engagement finds that only 55% of students feel safe in school. http://www.usatoday.com It also reports that students believe their schools care more about athletic achievement than academic excellence. Last week, infamous Jonesboro, AR teenager Mitchell Johnson was released from prison seven years after he and another student opened fire outside a Jonesboro middle school killing four students and a teacher. http://www.cnn.com Johnson, who was tried as a juvenile, left a Tennessee facility on his 21st birthday -- his record wiped clean. CBS’ Early Show decided to investigate whether adults were more likely to help a lost dog than lost child. http://www.cbsnews.com In their experiment, it took the child nearly three times as long to get help as the dog.
