“Highest ranking American at the Vatican” handed subpoena at final U.S. Mass…
San Francisco Archbishop William Levada, soon to be the highest ranking American at the Vatican, was welcomed to his final Sunday Mass by thousands of admiring parishioners, a few critics and a subpoena compelling him to testify about sex abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. http://www.cnn.com Levada was handed the subpoena minutes before he began the procession to the altar at St. Mary's Cathedral. It requires him to give a deposition August 12 concerning sex abuse allegations against priests in the now bankrupt Portland, Oregon Archdiocese, where he was archbishop from 1986 to 1995. Levada is expected to leave later this month for his appointment as head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the post held by former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger before he became Pope Benedict XVI. Meanwhile, a former Catholic priest admits what many have alleged, that he was moved from parish to parish after he was accused of molesting boys in an effort to cover up the abuse. http://www1.pressdemocrat.com

A program used to catch sex offenders walking into schools in Texas, Florida and Arizona soon will be introduced to New Jersey lawmakers. http://www.courierpostonline.com The program, called V.Soft, requires a visitor to hand over his driver's license when entering a school. The license would be inserted into an optical scanner. In about 10 seconds, the visitor would receive an identification sticker with the image from the license, the visitor's name, the date and time. During the time taken to produce the sticker, the visitor's name and date of birth would be checked against sex-offender databases from 42 states.

A foster care community designed by U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) and his wife, Christine, to resemble a small neighborhood so that foster families can support each other and raise children in a stable setting was officially opened Monday in Fort Bend County, TX. http://www.chron.com The Oaks at Rio Bend is a privately funded effort that will eventually be home to 192 foster children. The DeLays are former foster parents and launched the project because of their interest in the care of neglected and abused children. DeLay said he hopes Rio Bend will serve as a model for similar projects across the state and country.
