 8-year-old Shasta Groene was found having breakfast at a Denny’s restaurant with registered sex offender Joseph Edward Duncan II at 2:00 Sunday morning. http://www.foxnews.com Shasta has told investigators that her ordeal began six weeks ago when she awakened from her bed tied up and was tossed in the back of a pickup truck with her nine-year-old brother. http://www.washingtonpost.com Shasta would be repeatedly molested by a convicted sex offender and become the only apparent survivor of the five people in the home. Her brother  Dylan is presumed dead. A body which may be Dylan’s has been recovered. http://www.foxnews.com The sex offender Duncan had spent more than a decade in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy at gunpoint in Tacoma, Washington, and was a fugitive at the time of his arrest, after he was charged with molesting a 6-year-old boy in Minnesota. He was released on $15,000 bail earlier this year after being charged with molesting the boy. Police in Fargo, North Dakota had been looking for Duncan since May, when he failed to check in with a probation agent. By the time he was 16, Joseph Edward Duncan III estimated he had raped 13 younger boys, some at gunpoint, according to Pierce County, WA court records. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com It is unconscionable that a convicted sex offender arrested for the third time after admitting more than a dozen rapes was out on bail. Officials seemed surprised he didn’t check in with a probation officer.  One of Canada's most notorious female criminals, Karla Homolka, was secretly spirited from prison Monday after serving 12 years for the rapes, torture and murders of three teenage girls, including her younger sister. http://www.foxnews.com A video released months after her trial indicated Homolka had offered up her 15-year-old sister Tammy as a Christmas gift to Bernardo in 1990. It showed Homolka performing oral sex on her unconscious sister after slipping sleeping pills in her alcohol. Tammy died choking on her own vomit. In the following two years, the couple kidnapped and videotaped the rapes and beatings of 15-year-old Kristen, then 14-year-old Leslie.
 France's largest ever child abuse trial (see vol3_iss16 ) drew to a close yesterday with prosecutors demanding maximum sentences of up to 30 years for some of the 66 defendants accused of raping, sexually abusing and prostituting 45 children - sometimes their own. http://www.guardian.co.uk Verdicts in the case are expected on July 26.
 Gangs are recruiting younger and younger members according to experts. http://www.foxnews.com There was a time when gang leaders in Fort Worth would have told an 11-year-old that he was simply too young to join. Today, there is no age limit. Experts are not only seeing younger gang members, but they are seeing these kids commit serious felonies such as murder, robbery and vandalism.
 A study published Monday in the July issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine found that placing a television in a child’s room hurts learning and can even reduce the chances that they will get a college degree. http://www.msnbc.msn.com A separate study showed that owning a home computer improved test scores. Neither a television or a computer should ever be in a child’s (even a teen’s) bedroom.
