UN sees tsunami children sex trafficking risks...
It is not a secret that southern Asia is a favorite destination of those who travel from the U.S. and Europe to have sex with children. (see http://www.state.gov/g/tip/) The United Nations said last week that it was concerned that children orphaned or separated from their parents by Asia's tsunami may be falling prey to criminal gangs bent on selling them into slavery. The U.N. said it had received reports of adults posing as foster parents and children being shipped from Indonesia to Malaysia for sale. http://story.news.yahoo.com These worries have led Indonesia to take steps in an effort to protect such children. http://www.msnbc.msn.com Ambassador John Miller, Director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons sent a message asking relief groups to warn potential victims of human trafficking schemes, to register and protect those people in their shelter facilities, particularly children , and to educate new hires about human trafficking and outline a zero-tolerance policy for employees involved in human trafficking. http://www.state.gov

Andrea Yates conviction overturned...
The Texas First Court of Appeals reversed the capital murder conviction of Andrea Yates, who's serving a life sentence for drowning her children in a bathtub. http://www.chron.com The court reversed her conviction because, among other things, the state’s expert psychiatric witness testified that Yates had patterned her actions after a Law & Order television episode that never existed. Yates' attorneys vowed at the trial's end that they would appeal the case because of the testimony of Dietz, who told the jury he had served as a consultant on an episode of the television drama Law & Order in which a woman drowned her children in the bathtub and was judged insane. He had testified that the show aired shortly before Yates drowned her five young children.

In other news...

A pre-trial hearing on evidence is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, January 12 th.
