Clergy abuse settlement unsealed...
Details of a record $100 million settlement between alleged victims of priest sexual abuse and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange were unsealed, with church leaders saying it would make the diocese a "holier, humbler and healthier church.” http://www.sacbee.com The settlement resolves 90 lawsuits against the diocese that include allegations against 31 priests, 10 lay personnel, one religious brother and two nuns. Over 500 lawsuits are still pending against the neighboring Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Trial dates for some of these pending cases could be set later this week. In Boston, the case against defrocked priest Paul Shanley is down to one remaining “credible witness.” http://www.sfgate.com Boston attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who has represented more than 100 clergy abuse victims in lawsuits, said dropping three accusers from the case is not surprising. "The victims may have problems with drugs or alcohol and be portrayed as being unsteady or unstable, yet that instability was substantially caused by the perpetrator's sexual acts," Garabedian said.

Michael Jackson’s trial on child molestation charges is scheduled to get underway January 31 st, after Michael Jackson’s attorneys were unsuccessful in getting a six-week delay in the trial. http://story.news.yahoo.com Jackson’s attorneys had sought the delay saying they needed more time to review the 14,000 pages of evidence filed by prosecutors over the past two months. http://www.foxnews.com Last week court officials announced that up to 4,000 potential jurors would be summoned for the case. http://www.sfgate.com On Monday, the judge in the case continued a pattern of shielding all evidence from public view, releasing rulings and motions with blacked-out pages. http://www.cnn.com

The mother of the Michael Jackson accuser reportedly tricked a weekly newspaper into running a story seeking donations for her son's cancer treatments several years ago. http://www.wusatv.com It turns out the boy’s medical expenses were fully covered by insurance. With another hearing scheduled for Wednesday, January 12 th, and the trial still set for the end the month, we expect to revisit this subject almost every week for the foreseeable future.
