In focus: Memory...
There are a number of stories this week related to memory and the potential of false memories. NPR reports that “biological basis” for false memories has been revealed. http://www.npr.org A Northwestern University study concluded that “vivid imagination can forge false memories.” http://www.foxnews.com

The Lancaster Intelligencer-Journal reports that art therapy helps the elderly “recover” memories. http://lancasteronline.com So what does all of this mean? Well, for openers that the ability to scientifically implant memories of benign events or pictures doesn’t mean that memories can’t be suppressed and subsequently recovered.

For more information on memory, brainwaves, “recovered memory” and “false memory”, we recommend reviewing what we have previously reported.

Halloween and sex offenders...
Referring to Halloween as “curb service for perverts”, a Texas county has told sex offenders to stay inside and way from kids on Halloween. http://www.cnn.com According to the Bexar County (which includes San Antonio) District Attorney, "We are trying to keep kids from going to sex offender houses, knocking on the doors, and having a pervert meet them there." Sex offender records are public documents. To check and see if a child you love may be knocking on pedophile’s door, we recommend you visit the sex offender registry section of our website at http://www.childprotectionprogram.org/sor/index.php We also remind you that almost 1 in 4 sex offenders are failing to register as required by Megan’s Law. vol2_iss31

Kidman, “Birth” booed in Venice...
We’ve warned you several times about Nicole Kidman’s movie, “Birth,” in which she passionately kisses and bathes with a 10-year-old boy. vol2_iss40, vol2_iss36, and vol2_iss25 At a showing of the film at the Venice Film Festival, the movie and Kidman were booed by film critics. http://www.indielondon.co.uk Nevertheless, the British tabloid, the Guardian called the film “a sleek, intelligent drama which might best be characterised as Vertigo with a kindergarten twist”. The Guardian is the same paper which recently asked where Presidential assassins John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald and John Hinkley were when the world needed them. http://www.torontofreepress.com
