Top education officials in trouble...

California Education Secretary (and former Los Angeles Mayor) Richard Riordan
In the last few weeks we've highlighted a new Department of Education report stating that as many as 4.5 million children are victims of unwanted sexual advances by school employees. (http://tinyurl.com/4f6dq and http://tinyurl.com/5pvob) Apparently educational leaders are problems too. California Education Secretary (and former Los Angeles Mayor) Richard Riordan told a six-year-old girl that her name, Isis, meant "stupid, dirty girl". http://tinyurl.com/6d87u Much more troubling is news that a former Pittsburgh school board President, who served on the board for 14 years, pled guilty to raping a 7-year-old girl. http://tinyurl.com/724d6

Catholic Church faces problems in Austria...
Roman Catholic leaders in Austria have called an emergency meeting after finding more than 40,000 pornographic photos and films, including child pornography, on computers at a seminary 50 miles west of Vienna. http://tinyurl.com/46wk2 The scandal was the biggest to hit the Austrian church since 1995 when Cardinal Hans-Hermann Groer was first accused of molesting boys.

Silencing abuse victims not unique to Catholic Church...
Our local newspaper in Lancaster, PA has begun a series about abused women and children in the Plain Communities, and response, or lack of response, from Amish and Old Order Mennonite Church officials. http://tinyurl.com/3loqm, http://tinyurl.com/3tyhe, http://tinyurl.com/5c9cq and http://tinyurl.com/4umv9

In other news...
Senator Joseph Leiberman (D-CT) has introduced a bill to require a $90 million study on the effects of violent media on children. http://tinyurl.com/54wmy Child advocates who generally blame electronic media for everything from violence among children to childhood obesity claimed the study was a waste of money.

The California Supreme Court, overruling a 1983 Court precedent, is requiring those convicted of possessing child pornography in their home to register as a sex offender for life. http://tinyurl.com/455e4

Finally, Fox News will do a story today (Tuesday) on a child abuse case out of Utah in which a 12-year-old boy was removed from his home after being beaten with a 2 by 4, locked in handcuffs, chained to a bed and to a concrete block in the basement, and denied food for days at a time. http://tinyurl.com/4cf4t Linda Vester will question why the other children were left in the home.
