of a stepfather in the home doubles the risk for girls, not only
of being abused by the stepfather but also of being abused by other
men prior to the arrival of the stepfather in the home;" (READ

to occur with frequency among those who have suffered sexual abuse
as children are: major depression, Borderline Personality Disorder,
somatization disorder, substance abuse disorders, Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder, Disassociative Identity Disorder (sic), and bulimia
nervosa. Problematic behaviors and neurobiological alterations are
also associated with these psychological problems;" READ
ARTICLE HERE and finally "Rates of serious abuse of children
are lowest in the intact, married family but six times higher in
the step family, 14 times higher in the always-single family, 20
times higher in cohabiting-biological parent families, and 33 times
higher when the mother is cohabiting with a boyfriend who is not
the father of her children. In cases where abuse results in a child's
death, the relationship between family structure and abuse is even
stronger." READ

Last week we reported that the Department of Health & Human
Services has now set up a hotline (1-888-373-7888) to help victims
of sex trafficking. This week, the Justice Department brought charges
against 19 people for child prostitution, sex trafficking of children,
and "pimping". This is the largest case brought by the
Justice Department under the Protect Act against pimps for prostituting
juvenile girls. READ

Paul Shanley, a key figure in the Catholic Priest sex abuse scandal
has been formally defrocked. READ
ARTICLE HERE Shanley made news when the Boston Archdiocese was
forced to release records showing it had known about Shanley's abusive
past and his association with those who went on to form the North
American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA). As always, we remind
everyone that this isn't a Catholic-only clergy abuse problem.
Medical News Today reports that nearly half of all STD cases are
teens, and that an astounding 88% of diagnoses of human papillomavirus,
trichomoniasis and chlamydia were young people. http://www.abstinence.net
Two members of the U.S. House of Representatives have introduced
a bill which would require parental consent for non-emergency intrusive
physical exams of children. READ
ARTICLE HERE Rep. Jim DeMint (R-SC) and Rep. John Sullivan (R-OK)
introduced HR 3130 because they feel some exams being done without
parental notification in the Head Start program are "very personal
and sometimes it alarms children."
